Côa Museum hosts exhibitions that reflect on contemporary and rock art

ICNOVA researcher and visual artist Romy Castro is the author of the installation Earth as Event III: Coal and Photography – Unknown Territories, patented at the Côa Museum, within the Contemporary Landscape Perspective cycle. The exhibition opens on June 13th, and can be visited until September 23rd.

The installation proposes a reflection on the relationship between territory, landscape, memory and sustainability, through a transdisciplinary approach that crosses contemporary art, archaeology, geography, philosophy and environmental studies.

The exhibition presents a set of materials that include video, original photographs, an artist's book and copies of coal from different territories, exploring the symbolic and material potential of these materials as testimony of human interaction with the landscape over time.

The initiative integrates the work of the Social Impact Art Gallery, a project promoted by Hawk Stars NGO – Association for Education, Innovation and Social Development, whose curatorship is ensured by Romy Castro and Sofia Augusto. The project uses art as a tool of social intervention, seeking to contribute to the awareness of issues such as environmental sustainability, inclusion and active citizenship.

According to Romy Castro, the installation seeks to highlight the way that land materials, in particular coal, can constitute elements of connection between scientific knowledge, cultural heritage and contemporary artistic creation, promoting a reflection on the environmental and social challenges of the present.

Through this artistic and healing proposal, the Côa Museum reinforces the dialogue between heritage, research and contemporary practices, calling for new ways of thinking about the landscape and the relationship between communities, territory and environment.
